PhD Program: Knowledge Discovery in Scientific Literature (KDSL)

This PhD program has been successfully completed (active from 2013 to 2017). This website is maintained for archival purposes only.

It was launched in April 2013 at the Computer Science Department of the   Technische Universität (TU) Darmstadt in collaboration with the German Institute for International Educational Research (DIPF) in Frankfurt/Main.

Since July 2014, it was continued in collaboration with DIPF and was enriched by the researchers from the Department of Social and Historical Studies at the TU Darmstadt.

Research Focus

Our research was about novel methods of language and knowledge processing applied to the research publications in the educational domain. For an overview of the topics covered in the KDSL program, please see Nam et al. (2014).

We researched cutting-edge methods for multi-label classification, argumentation mining, focused crawling, relation extraction and temporal network analysis. KDSL applied these methods to answer research questions related to the educational research on novel corpora. Thus, we enabled new forms of intelligent information access for humanities researchers.

We were part of the Research Initiative „Knowledge Discovery in the Web“ at the Technische Universität Darmstadt. Besides, we worked together with the LOEWE Research Center „Digital Humanities“ (Univ. of Frankfurt, TU Darmstadt) and the Institute for Computational Linguistics (Univ. of Heidelberg).
