„in operando“ studies on Li(Ni,Co,Mn)O2 cathode materials (NCM) using local and global methods for structure analysis – modification and fatigue of materials

Lithium-ion batteries are electrochemical energy storage systems with very high energy efficiency and very high specific energy and power densities. They are considered as promising candidates for stationary energy storage from fluctuating renewable sources, but also the preferred energy storage systems for electromobility. The very complex interactions inside a Lithium-ion cell require a firm knowledge about the underlying processes and the relevant degradation mechanisms for a dedicated improvement of materials. This transfer project will extend the established characterization techniques within this Research Collaborative Centre by the Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) spectroscopy to interatomic length scales. Appropriate „in operando” experiments will reveal the underlying defect chemistry under real operation conditions and contribute to a comprehensive model for the fatigue of Li-ion batteries. Strategies for improved materials will be derived from such lifetime models and will be transferred into applications.
