Doctoral Symposium

*** Call for Submissions KogWis 2018 TU Darmstadt Doctoral Consortium is closed ***

KogWis Doctoral Consortium Overview

The DC is a concentrated half-day event that will be held on Thursday September 6th, 2018 which will focus on presentations and networking opportunities. Accepted students will be expected to give overview presentations of their doctoral research plans (approximately 15 minutes) and receive constructive critiques from mentors. Accepted students who additionally have a poster at KogWis will also be expected to hang their poster at this event, to allow attendees to quickly familiarize themselves with each other’s research. Finally, students are encouraged to bring their updated CV for feedback; as well as distributing to mentors. Mentors who have so far confirmed their attendance are: Betty Mohler (TU Darmstadt), Máté Lengyel (University of Cambridge & Central European University), Iris van Rooij (Radboud University Nijmegen) and Frank Jäkel (TU Darmstadt).

Submissions/Format

Students interested in participating in the DC are required submit a their curriculum vitae, and complete the following KogWis DC Online Application form: *application form closed*. Please also send your CV and any questions to the KogWis Co-Chairs (kogwis2018@cogsci.tu-darmstadt.de) with confirmation that you have filled out the google doc form.

Eligibility

Accepted students may be at any stage in their Ph.D. studies, however the submitted CV should reflect progress that has been made so far towards a Ph.D. dissertation (we encourage the listing of in press and in preparation papers).

Recommendations for Focus of Presentation

Newer Ph.D. students should discuss more about their research interests, research questions, and potential ideas that they have for narrowing down their dissertation topic. More advanced Ph.D. students should discuss their dissertation topic in more depth which may include but not limited to: data collected, results, shortfalls, proposed next steps, etc. Ph.D. students closer to graduation should discuss their dissertation topic in depth and proposed research for their career which may include but not limited to focused research interests, proposed work they would include in a research statement, etc.

Review

All applications submitted to the DC will undergo a thorough reviewing process (from the organizers of KogWis) with a view to providing constructive feedback. The best submissions will be selected for presentation both at the DC and poster session. The students will have a chance to meet and discuss their work with each other and with a group of senior researchers and practitioners called mentors. Please contact the program chairs if any assistance is needed in preparing an application. Participants will be chosen with an emphasis on diversity of topics, participants, approaches, and institutions.
